FC Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé has surgery at Mehiläinen Neo Sports Hospital in Turku
Ousmane Dembélé, a forward for the Spanish football team Barcelona, had hamstring surgery in Turku on 19 September 2017. He was injured on Saturday in a La Liga match. The surgery was conducted by orthopedists Lasse Lempainen and Sakari Orava at Mehiläinen Neo Sports Hospital.
“Ousmane Dembélé tore his hamstring muscle on Saturday in a way that required fairly speedy surgery. It was decided that the procedure would be carried out at Mehiläinen Neo Sports Hospital in Turku, where Dembélé arrived this morning. The surgery went according to plan, and the patient is doing well after it,” says orthopedist Lasse Lempainen.
Dr Ricard Pruna, the Head of Medical for FC Barcelona, followed the operation. Ousmane Dembélé is to return to Spain in the next few days to begin his rehabilitation.
“After successful surgery it is important to start rehabilitation at the right time and to carry it out according to a careful plan. Our aim is to have Dembélé back on the pitch close to the start of the new year,” Lempainen says.
Long collaboration with FC Barcelona
The collaboration between Sakari Orava and FC Barcelona began in 1992. Since then, Orava, Lempainen and other orthopedists from Neo have advised and trained the team on the care of diverse tendon and muscle injuries. They have also collaborated on research.
“My work with the team began at the Barcelona Olympics. I was then Head Physician for Team Finland and already had ample experience of Achilles operations. The physicians from FC Barcelona asked for my advice during the Olympics and we have been cooperating since then. I have done surgery on their athletes both in Finland and on site in Barcelona,” Orava explains.
“Naturally every patient is important to us, but of course these world-class elite athletes make for memorable moments in one’s career. FC Barcelona has built up an extensive multidisciplinary network of medical professionals. They trust us here in Turku in relation to muscle and tendon issues, such as hamstring and Achilles injuries, in particular,” says Lempainen.
Sakari Orava and Lasse Lempainen have long been working together. They have collaborated on many surgeries, including ones on two other Barcelona players this year. Three years ago they treated a hamstring injury sustained by the Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.
