Carles Aleñá from FC Barcelona in Mehiläinen Sports Hospital

Carles Aleñá of FC Barcelona undergoes successful surgery at Mehiläinen Sports Medicine

The promising central midfielder from FC Barcelona, Carles Aleñá (20), had surgery on a hamstring injury at Mehiläinen Sports Medicine in Turku on 7 June 2018. The operation, conducted by the sports orthopaedic surgeons Lasse Lempainen and Sakari Orava, went according to plan.

“The findings during surgery matched the initial MRI findings, and the operation progressed according to plan. The injury was a rupture of the biceps femoris, which in an athlete is best treated through surgery. The biceps femoris is one of the three hamstring muscles,” says Sports Orthopaedic Surgeon Lasse Lempainen from Mehiläinen Sports Medicine. “A realistic estimate for the patient’s return to the football field is in approximately four months. It is important not to rush the rehabilitation to prevent a repeat injury,” Lempainen explains.

Xavier Valle from the FC Barcelona Medical Services team was present, observing the surgery.  “We are pleased with our collaboration with Lasse Lempainen and Sakari Orava. The surgery appeared to go really well,” he says.

“FC Barcelona offers outstanding conditions and a step-by-step rehabilitation programme for players to return gradually to the pitch,” adds sports orthopaedic surgeon Sakari Orava. Carles Aleñá injured his hamstring during a match played by FC Barcelona B on Saturday 2 June 2018. Barcelona’s intention is to transfer Aleñá from the reserve team to its first team in the autumn.

Significant international collaborations

Mehiläinen Sports Medicine’s orthopaedists are at the international forefront and well-respected for their know-how in tendon surgery. Their high-level competence has led to extensive collaborations with sporting organisations such as Barcelona football club. The most visible form of collaboration is the treatment of athletes’ injuries, but background work is also done in sports injury research. Lasse Lempainen and Sakari Orava have previously also treated hamstring injuries of FC Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembélé and centre-back Thomas Vermaelen. They will be playing for their respective national teams in 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer.

Goalkeeper Ahmad Shambih grateful after the surgery

Goalkeeper Ahmad Shambih, 24, who has played for the UAE-based Al Nasr team since his youth, had surgery at Sport Hospital Mehiläinen in Turku on Thursday 6 September 2018. The successful operation was performed by Dr Lasse Lempainen in association with Dr Sakari Orava, both specialist sports orthopaedic surgeons.

Goalkeeper Ahmad Shambih was brought to Mehiläinen Sports Hospital thanks to an international network of partners in the sporting world. Al Nasr football club, which plays in the UAE Gulf League, started by consulting FC Barcelona, whose experts referred Shambih on to the specialists at Mehiläinen Sports Hospital in Finland.

“The Barcelonian team has been satisfied with the prior care its players have received from us, so they went on to recommend Mehiläinen Sports Hospital to the Emirati player,” Lempainen explains.

“The procedure was a logical choice, because an MRI clearly indicated an injury to Shambih’s hamstring that required surgery. The surgery findings matched the initial MRI findings,” says Lempainen, one of the sports orthopaedic surgeons at Mehiläinen Sports Hospital.

“I was a little nervous about the operation, because this was my first injury requiring surgery. Now I’m relieved and really happy with the care I have received. I was greatly impressed by the smooth cooperation network between FC Barcelona and the sports hospital,” says Shambih, in relation to his treatment at Mehiläinen Sports Hospital.

“We are very grateful for the treatment received thus far,” says the team’s own physician, Dr Walid, thanking the team at Mehiläinen Sports Hospital.

Already on the day after the surgery, Shambih was transferred to FC Barcelona for rehabilitation and postoperative care, as the Spanish club’s physiotherapy team has some of the world’s leading competence for helping the goalkeeper return to the pitch on top form.

“Rehabilitation with the help of FC Barcelona’s orthopaedists and physiotherapists will help Shambih recover, and there are promising signs that he could return to the game after four months,” estimates Lempainen, who will continue to assist with the rehab phase.

“Our whole team wishes Shambih all the best for a speedy recovery!”

Lucas Biglia of AC Milan had achilles surgery at Mehiläinen Sports Hospital

The Argentinian-born footballer Lucas Biglia had surgery at Mehiläinen Sports Hospital in Turku on Thursday 8 November 2018. The 32-year-old AC Milan player was injured during training on 31 October.
The surgery on Lucas Biglia’s achilles injury was conducted by Mehiläinen Sports Hospital’s resident orthopedist Sakari Orava together with orthopedist Lasse Lempainen. Also present during the operation were Biglia’s team physician Stefano Mazzoni and physiotherapist Daniele Falsanisi.

The collaboration between Mehiläinen Sports Hospital and AC Milan goes back a long way. “As in previous cases, the team sent us MRI scans, on the basis of which we made an assessment of the need for surgery,” explains Orava.

Lempainen says that the surgery was successful, and as for Biglia’s recovery, “the aim is to have the player back on the field in about four months.”
“We will keep a close eye on the player’s progress, and will provide instructions for his rehabilitation,” says Orava, explaining how the hospital plans to continue working with Biglia after the surgery.

Biglia has played on the Argentine national team, representing his home country in several FIFA World Cups – including Brazil in 2014, when the team took second place. Biglia stopped representing Argentina in 2018, but has played for AC Milan since 2017.

Biglia’s surgery is one in a long line of elite footballers’ injury treatments by orthopedists Orava and Lempainen at Mehiläinen Sports Hospital, which have included, just this year, hamstring surgery on Carles Aleñá of FC Barcelona and achilles surgery on Jaime Sánchez Muñoz of Real Madrid.
